Specialty formulations

Often hospitals will need a product with a different strength, dose or formulation for paediatric and adult patients. Some of the reasons for this include;

• The patient may be too young or too frail to swallow a tablet or capsule.
• The commonly available product may be too strong or too weak for the patient.
• The patient may react to some ingredients in the available product e.g. preservatives.
• The drug may be better absorbed through an alternate route of administration e.g. suppository vs. oral dose.
